Before the Ganges

Why this trip?

The journey begins south of Ranchi, in the Jharkhand region, on the Chota Nagpur plateau. This is an area of India rarely included in standard tourist itineraries: an inland state of forests and mines, where the altitude maintains a more temperate climate compared to the Ganges plain.

It is a territory rich in natural resources, yet among the poorest in the country in terms of public services, where more than a quarter of the inhabitants belong to the Adivasi communities, a Sanskrit word meaning "the first inhabitants". People with a strong identity, who fight to keep their language, festivals and traditions alive.

The project

In Jareya we support the Nawa Maskal School, the "school of the new light": around eight hundred students distributed across twenty-two classes, coming from fifty surrounding villages.

Volunteers dedicate their time to the students, helping them with their homework and organising games after school. It is possible to collaborate with teachers in building a library, managing the school vegetable garden or working in the bakery. Healthcare professionals can help the school clinic during visits to nearby villages.

Walks through the villages and maintenance work on the spaces are another way to meet the local community.

Activities are adapted according to the time of year and the group of volunteers. Contact us for more information.

The itinerary

From Jareya, you depart at night on the train to Varanasi, which leaves Ranchi in the evening and arrives at the Ganges the following morning. You stay in Varanasi for two days, moving mainly on foot or by water: the first afternoon among the ghats and alleys, the evening at the Ganga Aarti, the sunset ceremony with candles on the river. The next day, you board a boat at dawn, when the city washes and prays.

The journey continues westward, among the great monuments of northern India: in Agra, the Taj Mahal at dawn and the fort, then Jaipur with the Amber Fort, the Hawa Mahal, and the evening bazaars. It concludes in Delhi for the flight back.

Passports and visas

British citizens need a visa to enter India, even for a short stay. You apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. A 30-day tourist eVisa costs 25 dollars between July and March, and 10 dollars between April and June, plus a 2.5% bank fee. Apply at least four days before you travel. You need a passport with at least six months of validity left from the date of application and two blank pages. Take note of one detail with flights: the eVisa only permits entry by air through specific airports. Ranchi is not on the list. You must enter via Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Varanasi, then take a domestic flight. You must also fill in the Air Suvidha arrival card up to 72 hours before you land. Entry rules change often without notice. Check official travel advice before you go, or message us.

Vaccinations, when to go and what the trip costs: it is all in the FOLK guide to India.

Insurance

Travel insurance is included in the price and also covers cancellation up to 30 days before departure. We recommend adding health insurance to cover medical expenses, evacuation and repatriation: this remains the responsibility of the traveller. In India, private facilities in major cities are good and require payment in advance, so it is important to have a policy that pays directly. Before departure we will explain in detail what should be covered.

Useful information

Before you leave, check your own government's travel advice for India (for example the UK Foreign Office or the US State Department): it covers safety, health and vaccinations, and is updated constantly. For the entry documents you need with your passport, the IATA Travel Centre is the source airlines themselves use. Rules change often, so it is worth checking again close to departure. If you have any doubts, write to us.

Frequently asked questions

The most frequently asked questions. For anything else, write to us.

Is the price I see the final one?

It depends, as there may be slight differences based on the number of people in the group and the time of year you are travelling. On the trip page, you will find a list of what is included and what is not. Fill in the form for the trip you are interested in, and we will get back to you with more precise information.

Are flights included?

No, you buy the flight yourself, departing from whichever airport is most convenient for you. We will give you details on times and the meeting point. Wait to buy it until the departure is confirmed. If you prefer, our partner agency can buy the flight for you.

How do I book a trip?

From the trip page, fill in the form with the departure date you are interested in. Once the trip is confirmed, you will receive instructions from our partner agency on how to pay the deposit. At that point, the trip will be confirmed.

How much of the trip is dedicated to the project?

It is not a full-time commitment: the project takes up part of the day, not all of it. The rest is for exploring, spending time with locals, and your own free time. The exact breakdown can be found in the itinerary for each trip.

What does co-designed with the community mean?

Before a trip even exists, we work with local partners to understand what is truly needed and what makes sense to do in a week with six people. The project is created by them, not by us, and you can find it described on the trip page.
