Folk is a word that exists in every language, and always means "the people, the ordinary people".
Those who inhabit a place. Those who know it from the inside, not just passing through. Those who carry its memory in their hands.

Folk comes from a simple belief: travel can be an ethical act. Not an escape, not a form of consumption, but a true encounter between real people, in places that have something to say to those who stop to listen.

Where it all began

We are Vittorio Randone and Alberto Giordano. In 2018, we travelled to Mongolia with some friends, our first real journey together. During those days, we were able to spend time supporting the community of Arvajhėėr. That made the journey unforgettable, and it showed us how we wanted to travel from then on. Over the years, we kept asking ourselves what it means to set off. We felt a pull towards places and people we did not know, and a desire to connect with them. In 2026, we founded FOLK to bring you along with us.

We are Vittorio and Alberto, and in 2018, together with some of our friends, we went on a trip to Mongolia, our very first adventure. During those days, we had the chance to make ourselves useful to the people of the Arvajhėėr community, which not only made that journey an unforgettable experience but, above all, made us realise that this would be the best way for us to travel. Throughout all these years, we have never stopped questioning the meaning of setting off on a journey, and we have always felt a strong pull towards something we do not know but want to build a relationship with. In 2026, we created Folk to involve you in this journey too.

Manifesto

✣ We are not going to save anyone

The world of international volunteering often still carries the narrative of the saviour: those who set off with the answers already in their pockets, the projects already written, the certainty of knowing what other people need. A logic that is generous in its intentions, but colonial in its effects. We do not set off with a plan, but with a question: how can we be of use? And we listen to the answer, even when it surprises us, even when it makes us uncomfortable. Even when it is: for now, nothing. Being useful, depending on the case, can mean working with your hands or sitting at the table and letting yourself be hosted with kindness. Sometimes it means simply being there, without claiming a role and without looking for a purpose to talk about when you return.

✣ The mark that matters cannot be seen

In the world of travel, a romantic, somewhat arrogant idea circulates: that of wanting to "leave a mark". FOLK starts from a different premise: the most respectful journey is the one that does not alter, does not overwrite, does not claim. One that enters a place on tiptoe and leaves it as it was. This does not mean setting off without expecting anything in return, but understanding where the mark is truly left: in the traveller who returns with a question they didn't know they had before, in the memory of that encounter that both sides now carry with them.

✣ We set off to be amazed, not to amaze

There is a grammar of contemporary travel made of destinations to tick off, photos to post, sunsets to capture. With Folk, you set off for an older reason, one that is harder to put into words: wonder. That moment of suspension when you realise that the world is bigger than you had imagined, and you are much smaller. Deserts that change colour at dawn. Mountains that have a name only in the language of those who live there. Markets where people speak a language you won't find on any app. Festivals celebrated once a year, in a village, and no one outside of that village knows they exist. FOLK looks for this, not to be exclusive, but because it is there that the world reminds us that it is ancient, strange, and much richer than we expected.

✣ You don't go to "a country". You go to a place.

A specific place, with a specific history, with people who do not necessarily feel represented by the flag they live under. We set off convinced that it is impossible to contain an entire country in just a few weeks of travel, to extract its essence and return home with something complete. This is why we choose specific places and decide to stay. Learning to find our way around, to recognise faces, to understand why that square is different from all the other squares in the world. For Folk, slowness is respect for a place that cannot be reduced to an itinerary.
